"Amazingly light, durable, and above all comfortable trail shoes." 01/20/12
I bought these for day hikes and trail running (10 to 20 mile summit runs and so on.) I've also used them for several backpacking trips with ~20-30 lb packs. After a steep, 15 mile day with a pack, I didn't want to take them off - they're that comfortable! The combination of a full foot "Trail Shield," particularly well-designed footbeds and insoles (which I eventually replaced with Superfeet, which also kick ass,) and the fact that they weigh a mere 10.8 ounces is pretty hard to beat. Most shoes like this weigh at least 2 or 3 ounces more, and at the end of the day, that's an awful lot of extra weight your feet have lifted.
"Awesome trail runner; about to get second pair" 12/22/11
This shoe is awesome. Flat out best on uneven rocks, slippery surfaces, mud, etc. I have run several adventure races with this and haven't had any traction issues at all or other injury. The toe box is kinda different but not uncomfortable. In addition, its got great support and surprisingly quick drying.
"Just purchased second pair" 09/09/11
Bought a pair of these in May and have worn for approximately 3 days per week for 15 hours at a time, work related. Part of the floors where these shoes constantly tread are slippery when wet and the Masochist don't budge. A slightly narrow fit (size 13) that I wasn't sure of at first but is great for a firm solid fit. 1st pair aren't quite worn out yet but I didn't hesitate to order the 2nd pair as they are worth it. A light shoe that can serve for 15 hours at a time without any discomfort.
"Great shoes. Buy two pair." 07/24/11
The Masochist is a great trail running shoe because of its light weight, ample tread, and superior cushion. It is breathable and tightens up to fit an average to narrow laste, with a roomy toe box, making it a comfortable ride for long running and hiking trips. I've always liked Adidias trail shoes and I've had some good Scarpas, but the Masochist is by far my favorite trail running shoe over the last 20 years. Also, don't rule out the Gor-Tex version. It's pretty breathable.
"Great fit and feel in a lightweight shoe." 01/17/11
I have been using this shoe since it first became available. This shoe is lightweight, tight through the arch (though adjustable) and roomy in the toe box. All in all this is the perfect shoe for someone that has wide feet, flat arches and yet prefers a lightweight hiking shoe, like myselfMy only regret is that I didn't wait until the gore-tex version became available. I mainly use this shoe for trail running and summer backpacking/hiking. The lack of gore-tex makes it more breathable, but the gore-tex would allow it to be worn on trails that are of the muddy variety and during shoulder seasons. As such, I will soon be purchasing the mid top gore-tex version of this shoe.
"Light, Comfortable & Sticky" 10/12/09
This shoe is my shoe of choice after grinding through about 10 different trail shoes in the past year. I run about 10-15 hours a week of very technical, hilly terrain over lots of different surfaces. All in, this shoe performs better and sticks better to a variety of surfaces than any other I've used in recent years. It fit comfortably right out of the box and hasn't given me a single blister yet (even after an 85km race this past weekend). The only fault I can find is the fact that I've worn out the sole and need a new pair after about 400km. But for the great price, low weight and performance feel, I cannot rave about this shoe enough.
"Comfortable yet lacking most trail shoe basics" 08/13/09
These shoes fit like slipper and have cushioning like a mattress! The problem is, would you want to trail run in a pair of slippers with a mattress on the bottom? After discontinuing the Hurricane Ridge model, I decided to go for a different model. They toted a sticky rubber sole, Well.. once the ground got a little wet, i slip around like crazy. Umph. Doesn't montrail know these will be used out side? Why do people mess with a good thing?, i'm not sure but i would bet that either some new product designer came in and decided to put his/her fingerprint on the shoe line, or the company was sold and is now being run by looking at the bottom line.
