The Arc'teryx Men's Beta SL Jacket is a storm jacket for unexpected rain when hiking the backcountry. The Beta SL is made with Gore-Tex PacLite, a superlight fabric that is waterproof while allowing your body to breathe at the same time. The trim fit reduces bulk and stays close to your body so excess fabric won't flap in the wind, while still allowing for a next-to-skin baselayer underneath. The Beta is a short jacket, falling to the hips, with a drawcord for blocking out drafts. At the cuffs, the Velcro adjusters will also seal out drafts at the wrist. With a durable water repellent treatment and WaterTight zippers, water rolls right off without soaking in. Take the Beta anywhere, as it is compact and easily stuffed into your pack until the weather turns. Don't quit your hiking because of a little rain or snow.

Have now used this jacket to ski (in New England "mixed precip") as well as around town. For a wintertime waterproof layer it's been great. I can't really comment on breatheability as I haven't had it in weather greater than 35* but I was out on the hill coaching for several hours and I was dry upon the conclusion of my day. I was also unsure as to the quality an look of the garment based on reviews and pictures but it doesn't look cheap at all - in fact it looks significantly better than my mountain hardware dry-q rain jackets - and certainly packs better. It is girlfriend approved when I wore it around town with jeans as well. My only complaint on the jacket - which is a typical arcteryx complain of mine - is that the front is just an inch or two too short. My Atom LT that I layered under it (also a small) just barely sticks out and did get a little wet at the bottom. Just a couple more inches in front and this coat would be a "love it!".
The Beta SL jacket is awesome!!!! a good packable to put in your pack in case of less than desirable weather and i like to layer mine with a light base layer while i ride the brooklyn streets. the Beta's 2Layer construction keeps it light while cutting the wind and keeps any drizzle off me. Arcteryx has set the bar very high for its competitors and with this affordable option its only going to keep me and others coming back for more. Also thanks to Moosejaw for the awesome customer service and fast shipping.
i needed to step up my gift game this year so i went all arcteryx lolz...this one was for my bro who doesn't have a good gore-tex shell but has alot of base layers, so i decided to make the jump on his behalf.. good quailty for the $$$ i still use my beta sl and it's about 4 years old
"Excellent jacket for low intensity or city wear."
This is the best in-city rain jacket I've ever owned. No pit zips, so probably not your best bet for high-intensity activity, but it's completely waterproof and has a great athletic fit. My only reservation is that the hood is a bit big (to accommodate a helmet, I suppose, but this isn't the kind of jacket you'd wear to ski or climb).
The Beta SL has been my backpacking rain jacket of choice for the last three years. I have put this thing through hell and it has never been phased. It has withstood hours of downpours in canyons, allowing for longer days of fishing. Now, it is by no means a rival for the Beta AR or Alpha LT, but for being a Paclite jacket I couldn't be more impressed. This being said, I wish it had pitzips. The Paclite fabric breathes pretty damn well, but as far as air circulation goes, nothing beats some zips.
