My friend, who happens to be a fairly reputable duck, told me these boots have great support, that they're waterproof and breathable and all the mallards in the pond have been whipping 'em at the fountain.
The Women's Stynger GTX Hiking Boot by Asolo is a rugged yet hi-tech Gore-Tex lined Suede and Cordura light hiking and trekking boot. The Stynger GTX features Asolo's Duo AsoFlex technology and Energy Outsole. Duo Asoflex is the synthesis of Asolo's research; two elements are melted together to improve comfort and performance. The first element, constructed of a stiff material benefits anti-pronation, anti-supination and anti-torsion. The second element, constructed with a softer material offers shock absorption while walking.

Picked up this shoe from my local MJ store a few days before leaving for a month-long backpacking trip in Alaska. It was perfect--I wore it up to 14 hours a day through snow, sand, mud, river crossings, bushwhacking, scrambling up steep slopes and the like and never suffered more than a few small hot spots (despite never bothering to break them in beforehand) while my buddies fell victim to some pretty awful-looking blisters. Small thing of note--you can stand in a river for ages without getting your feet wet, provided the water level doesn't surpass the height of the boot. Once the water gets in, however, it stays in. Understandable due to the Gore-Tex. I would dry out my boots overnight (taking out the insoles and tipping them sideways to let the water drain out) and they'd be all set the next morning. Also a little heavy but so worth the support. Highly recommended.
Hiked Iceland/Greenland with its uneven terrain, lava beds, and glaciers. These Asolo boots (recommended and fitted by Charlie in Rochester, MI) were lightweight and very comfortable - no need to break in. Ankle support was awesome (I have wobbly ankles) and boots were crampon compatible; kept my feet warm and dry in the rain. This is the best boot I have ever owned. Pick up a pair - you won't go wrong!!
Hiked easily in Iceland/ Greenland last month over uneven terrain, lava beds, and glaciers - the boots are crampon compatible. They didn't need breaking in. Loved the ankle support and the lightweight construction made these extremely comfortably. Would highly recommend!!
This boot has a lot of good things about it: it's sturdy, waterproof, has good ankle support and a great lacing system. But at the end of a day of backpacking 10-15 miles with a 40lb pack, my feet just killed. I tried them 5-6 times on the trail, and couldn't get them to break in to the point that I wasn't constantly thinking about how bad my feet hurt. There is very little to no cushioning in the sole, even with aftermarket inserts, and blisters were often a problem on steep trails, even with multiple different techniques of tying them. While they work for a lot of folks, they're definitely not for everyone, so I'd recommend trying them on locally before taking the plunge.
"Definitely should get you a pair...of these!"
My only regret is that I didn't get them sooner! I purchased these in preparation for the Afghanistan winter. So far so good. They have held up magnificently in the mud, rain & cold. The snow hasn't quite reached me yet. There really wasn't much of a break in time. I went on a full kit march the second day of owning them without regret...not one blister. They are rigid enough to provide ankle support yet not so stiff as to feel as though you are wearing ski boots. They don't go up crazy high up the ankle. The colors are subdued enough to blend in uniform (minus the asolo logo in yellow). These were a fantastic purchase & am now sold on this brand...and on Moosejaw.
"nylon reinforced toe cracked with very light wear"
I was shocked over the 'nylon' toe being aggressively reinforced. this is not the case. I have yet to really break these in and the small and large cracks appear as knife slices. my old asolo's appear to be a harder reinforced leather-type and this did not occur. back to the drawing board on this design.
This is a great pair of hiking shoes. Keeps my feet dry in wet, muddy conditions. Handles mud, scree, and boulder-hopping well. I had no problems breaking them in, but needed to replace the footbed with green Superfeet to keep the arches of my feet happy on long hilly hikes. I have wide feet, and wear the same size in these as in my street shoes.
I have had two pairs of these, and can't imagine buying another fieldwork boot. A quick shot of waterproof spray, and I have been all set. Great for ankle support for those of us who forget to pay attention to where we are walking. Good sole traction (before wearing out-- the reason I bought a new pair).
After reading all of the good reviews, I decided on the Stynger. I'm so happy with my purchase! They didn't need much breaking in before our 15 mile hike over a pass in Glacier Natl. Park. No blisters and great ankle support. They are well made and have held up well. I bought them 2 years ago and they still look like new and the tread has held up nicely. I don't usually tend to spend much on shoes and clothing but this was an investment that was well worth it! Thanks, Moosejaw...for the great deal, awesome customer service and speedy delivery!! Happy Hiking!
"Excellent backpacking boot for wet, rocky and rough terrain!"
On their first outing, the Asolo Stynger boots stayed dry after multiple river crossings, sloshing through miles of marshy fields and being completely immersed in water 1” below the top of the shoe. The shoes are stiff/strong enough to kick into coarse, gravelly rocks on slopes w/o causing foot injuries/discomfort, the lacing system stays put without slipping, the sole offered very secure grip, even on wet, odd-shaped rocks and are relatively lightweight. They run narrow in the toe, so if you wear ww get 1/2 a size up. They are pricey, but well worth the money since they last longer. I’ve gone through reputable brands in 3-5 trips and so far, the Asolos are holding up strong after 10+ trips.
