i don't even remember how or where I found about the kanken but it is truly the best backpack in the world. i now own two with the intention of many more in my future. anyway, the bag. first, my 17 inch laptop (same bag, but with a laptop pouch) is the perfect schoolbag due to its illustrious square shape that is perf for schoolbooks and binders. my normal-sized kanken is ideal for everything from museum visits to air travel. plus, it's easy to take through customs because of the front loading style. i've taken my kanken i think 11 countries and it's durable style and waterproof material has never wavered. i can't think of anything i don't like about it-oh, and the carrying handles on top are prime. they're kinddaaaa hard to wash, so if you insist on a spotless backpack, avoid dirty hostel floors and picnics. bottom line, the kanken is the perfect bag for the traveler, the student, the wannabee scandinavian, and for some reason, elderly japanese tourists (at least in riga)
So I was looking for a unique and durable backpack, and the Fjallraven Kanken was the perfect choice. I have been using it for a couple months now for high school and it has been great! I can fit all the basics that I need including my ipad, a 1" binder, seven folders, a graphing calculator, and a notebook. In the front pocket I keep my phone, chapstick, gum, and other small items. What I really love about this backpack is the shape. It is square, unlike the common round shape for backpacks. The square-ness keeps all of my school supplies in place, instead of letting it all sag and pull on my back. Carrying my stuff in the Kanken feels lighter compared to other backpacks because of this. My only complaint is that the small size doesn't allow me to carry anything else, but for everyday use it is all I need for the basics while keeping a stylish appearance.
My son (3rd grade) has been using the backpack for a few months. My opinion; durability is great, washes up great, straps are thin (not padded) - this is generally fine except when my son brings home a lot of school materials - after walking home backpack is uncomfortable. For the price I would buy another backpack. Cute, but not the best.
I am buying another of these because my daughter has lost the one I purchased 27 years ago (scary !). I had a pale pink color. I used it for college, day packs etc We were all orienteering in those days so it was a cool item as well So glad to see new colors but classic design and hoping the new one will last as long .. and not be borrowed and lost !!
I had been looking for a compact, waterproof backpack for the longest time & I finally found it with Fjallraven's Kanken. The backpack is completely weatherproof, holds just as much as larger backpacks, and is just as great for the outdoors as it is for school. Not to mention the great color selection! I would recommend the Kanken to anyone looking for a cute, versatile backpack.
