The Patagonia Men's Adze Jacket is a windproof soft shell jacket for going to work during the week and visiting the trails on the weekend. The Adze is made from Polartec® Windbloc® stretch woven soft shell fabric, a polyester/spandex blend that is soft to the touch, stretches so you can move, and blocks the wind from chilling your upper half. The durable water repellent finish allows you to make it from the car to the office door without getting soaked and even allows for a late afternoon walk through sprinkling rain. The gridded fleece backer adds a touch of warmth to prevent shivering in cold weather while the drawcord hem and hook and loop closure cuffs block drafts. Got lucky and snagged the last Classic Navy in XL!!! Christmas present for me ;) 6'-4" and 205# with athletic build - the fit is spot on, sleeves are plenty long for my lanky arms, little wide in the waist but will have room to layer fleece or light down vest underneath. This is my new go to jacket for the fall, winter and spring. Have another softshell jacket but its a little too much in the fall and spring whereas this one has the perfect combination of a wind barrier and light insulation. By itself in January and February it wont be enough but throw a fleece qtr zip underneath or a 7-800 fill vest underneath and its perfect. The Classic Navy is great color for all-around wear - at the office, Christmas parties, hoofing it down town or on the trail with a pack. Looking forward to many years of use.
Jacket is warm and stretch in fabric optimizes fit. However, neck is stiff and chafes against face if running, longer hiking, etc. Would wear around town, but next trail run or backpacking adventure leave this one behind.
I bought this jacket to replace my North Face Apex jacket. I needed a water/wind proof outer layer jacket for the winter and it does a great job at that. It also fits me better or at least more to my liking than my old North Face jacket (I am a scrawnier and taller person than most).
I recently purchased this jacket and I have since worn it several times. First off, I am 6'1" and weigh 185 pounds. The large fits me perfect. I usually have trouble finding jackets with long enough arms, but this jacket has very long arms that are perfect. The jacket itself is long as well. It sits below the waist, covering up any untucked shirt tails. As for the quality of the jacket, it is fantastic. Now don't expect it to be as warm as a wool or goose down jacket; it is not made for extreme cold. I have worn it over a t-shirt in the low 20's and was pretty warm. It is great for layering if you are going to be high in the rockies. I live where the wind constantly blows, and this jacket does a great job at blocking it out. Better than Northface. It also does a good job at repelling water. I like that it has an internal pocket on the chest. My favorite part, however, is the look of the jacket. It is a very good looking jacket that you can wear to virtually any occasion.
I bought this while on a trip to Chicago and it was a bit colder then I was expecting. I am so glad I was unprepared or I probably never would have found this amazing jacket. Its warm, light weight, stretchy, comfortable, and looks great. I bought it in black and will probably buy another one in a different color. One of my favorite jackets!
Just got the coat in the mail. 6'1" and 170 lb and the L fits well. Sleeves are a little on the long side which I like, and it fits snug around the torso without being overly constricting. Inner lining is kind of a waffle polartec which makes it comfortable over just a t shirt. Overall, happy with the jacket. I wanted something that I could wear both in the backcountry and to the office. This jacket is both stylish and functional which fits the bill well.
This is a great softshell. I got it mainly for walking around town and when I go golfing in the early AM during the spring. It serves so many purposes at the same time; It blocks out the wind, can keep you dry in a light drizzle, and the interior lining gives you a bit of warmth. Best of all, the jacket is slightly stretchy so you don't feel like you are wearing a bag :)
I had an older softshell jacket for about 8 years now, and figured I wanted to get a new one for this winter. I tried out the Adze, Bionic, and Chromium. This Adze was my first choice, and though it does block the wind well, the sleeves are a bit too long and the lack of chest pocket, and smaller interior pockets were a disappointment that I didnt think I would really miss. It was nice to put license/cc into the chest pocket when going out. The XL was a good fit on my 6ft, 200lb frame, but the sleeves and lack of pockets were the deal breaker. I ended up returning and going with the Chromium.
This morning in Michigan it was -13 degrees with a wind chill of -35. Coldest weather I've ever been in. Perfect conditions to see what this jacket can handle. With only a lightweight 1/4 zip fleece underneath, this jacket kept me very comfortable while walking the long trek from the parking lot to my work, pumping gas, and any other times outside today for15-20 min. Very impressive for such a light jacket in -35 deg wind. The wind was intense and this jacket provided superb wind protection. You could feel the cold on the outside of the jacket but the wind did not penetrate one bit. Material is very flexible and the jacket isn't bulky or cumbersome. I'm 5 '7" 185 lbs and a large works well with room for some layering. Sleeve's are good with a little extra length to use the adjustable cuff to seal around your gloves. Pockets are positioned a bit high but it doesn't bother me. It allows you to use a pack with a waist strap while having access to your pockets. Pocket lining is cozy warm!
