The Men's Retro-X Jacket by Patagonia's breathable/windproof P.E.F. (performance-enhancing film or Primary Elephant Fuel as I like to think of it) barrier sits comfortably between layers of thickly piled, ecofriendly PCR Synchilla fleece and a Capilene brushed-mesh lining. This men’s fleece jacket offers a windflap behind full-front zip closure, zippered side and chest pockets. The Retro-X Jacket is ideal for lift-accessed riding, fly fishing, base camp warm up, around town, or outdoor work. This Patagonia fleece jacket has Y-joint sleeves making this a front-runner in the world of men’s fleece jackets. Yes, I would like that.

"Awesome materials but the fit is way off."
I was highly anticapating this jacket, it looks amazing on every website and the specs fit the bill for a workhorse fleece jacket for those dry, cold, windy days. I opened the package and loved what I saw, dense fleece, windproof lining, and great patagonia quality on the stitching. I particularly love the position of the chest pocket on this jacket, its lower on the chest than your typical jacket, it is also deep and has great utility. The fleece is awesome, like a sheep fleece, super dense and warm. All of this being said, it fits like a black trash bag and the only place I wear that is at the start of a marathon. I'm 5'9'' and 145 so 9 times out of 10, I take a small. The small on this jacket is overly roomy in the middle, like I could hide a few bags of trail mix and no one would know. The fit is also short, it reached my waist line but if I reached up, the jacket went clear past my naval. My last gripe on the fit is the sleeves, again, super baggy, debilitatingly baggy.
So I found out that the Retro X when coupled with my down insulator is the warmest jacket I have. I brought it with me on a recent trip to Michigan where it was getting below zero at night, and I didn't really expect to wear it much. I have a really old Patagonia shell that's nice and long and has a hood and thought that would be what I wore. Uh uh. This thing blocks wind and traps heat better than any shell I have. I was shocked actually. This thing's legit, and totally reliable even in subzero temps (given you have the proper layers on underneath).
First off, I live in Myrtle Beach S.C. Not the coldest place but it is certainly windy enough and the temps get in the low 30's. That being said this jacket is super light and very warm. Most of all, like another reviewer said, the windproof is definitely legit! My only concern prior to ordering it was the sizing. I've read other reviews that people say order a size down. Well I didn't and it's a perfect fit. I'm 6'2 and 210lbs. and fairly in shape. The jacket fits really well. If your on the fence about this jacket, don't be. Slap your old lady, and demand your Patagonia jacket:)
If you are looking for a warm/windproof jacket for casual wear, this is perfect. This is not a technical jacket. It's not cut for technical use and won't wear as a performance piece would. This is great for apres` or strolling around in the cold. Very relaxed and boxy cut with room for layers. Length is shorter, cut right above the hip and sleeves tend to be fairly short. I usually wear an XL jacket but I size down for this particular style. I've got two of them and love them both. A classic Patagonia piece.
The Patagonia Classic Retro-X Jacket combines a windresistant lining with the distinctive Retro-X "mature sheep" fleece for a great intermediate outerwear garment. This reviewer found it very adequate for dry cold conditions in the 20 degrees to 40 degrees range in Alaska. It is a bit bulky and stiff for anyone wearing gear or a backpack, or doing overhead work. However, it is excellent for yardwork, shingling a roof, running errands, casual wear, and long walks in cool weather. Matting the outer fleece down over time actually improves the look. The Classic Retro-X jacket is highly recommended to Patagonia fans as another quality product.
