The Patagonia Men’s R1 Hoody is a fleece pullover for active adventures on the trail or skiing down the mountain. The Polartec Power Dry polyester fleece has a grid pattern, which helps to regulate temperature by quickly wicking moisture off your skin and drying it out. It even provides stretchy movement and makes it easier to stuff into your bag for later. The smooth feel will put a smile on your face, and additional layers glide over top easily. Lighter weight fabric at the pits, cuffs, and waist minimizes bulk and increases breathability. The off-center zip makes the balaclava-style hood more comfortable against your face, so you can pretend you’re scuba diving in the winter.

"Cannot say enough good things about this!"
Used this on a 12-day backpacking trip in September at pretty high (10,000-ft plus) elevation. It was definitely my go-to insulating layer under the puffy jacket, and was great for other times when it wasn't super cold. This quickly became my favorite piece of gear. The hood will fit under a helmet if needed, and you can also put this on wearing a helmet as the zipper goes pretty far down. Love the off-centered zipper that allows the hood to comfortably cover your mouth. The thumb loops are an awesome extra feature, and the arms are extra long for great coverage. The seams are sewn so that the shirt fits very well and they don't rub you the wrong way under a pack. Overall, a highly recommended piece of clothing.
This is a great fleece/insulating layer. Comfortable, warm, breathes well, and looks great. The off-center zipper is a great design improvement over most zip-necks on the market, and the thumb "loops" are super strong and incorporated right into the seam of the piece's arms. The reinforced material along the bottom of the torso and sleeves also prevents stretching and hugs the body to prevent drafts. One warning: there is a significant jump in fit between the medium and large sizes. I go back and forth between large and medium with Patagonia's slim and alpine sized pieces. I'm 6'0", 168" (give or take) and found the medium just a bit too snug to wear with a fitted base layer. The large has more room than I typically like in a layering piece but I really find the overall fit extremely comfortable to move, climb, and sleep in.
I am not sure why I initially purchased the R1 hoody, but it was so freaking cold this winter, and I liked the idea that you could zip up the hood and cover your neck. Being a teacher, I judge just about anything I buy anymore on how it can stand up to the rigors of RECESS...dum dum dum. I love it!! It is so cozy to put on, and the zip neck and hood really offers protection from the wind. I have purchased the glass blue, a very wild yellow and black, and I am looking forward to next years colors. It seems very stylish. I think it looks good out in the regular world too.
"I love this thing more than is reasonable"
I was looking for a new light insulating layer and stumbled upon people raving about the R1 hoody. Usually Patagonia is a bit too spendy for me, but it was on sale and the reviews said it was worth it so I jumped. I can't express to you how glad I am I bought this thing. I've mostly used it for skiing so far, but it is outrageously comfortable, very warm and the hood! The hood is so awesome, it fits great underneath a helmet and obviates the need to wear a hat (which is good because I always forget them). All this aside, my favorite thing about the R1 hoody is the length. I'm 5'10, 155 and I generally run into problems with sizing: small fits, but is too long, whereas medium is the right length but way too big. The slim fit of this thing is PERFECT for me, it has a bunch of extra length which helps to keep it from riding up. As for the color, I got the graphite navy...essentially dark purple. Not a dealbreaker, but worth a head's up to anyone considering it.
Most everyone already knows it but the R1 hoody is great. Love the R1 fabric, comfy against the skin, warm, smooth faced so works great under other stuff. The hood is great (snug), the zip is great, the sleeves with thumbholes are great, the length is great. The only thing to complain about is that it looks a bit funky if you're wearing it casually, it definitely has a technical look to it particularly with the eccentric zip. For just lounging around the house, I prefer the capilene 4 hoody, but if I could only own one I'd keep the R1.
Bought this piece of gear a few months back after a very chilly climbing trip to The Red and The New. My friend that I brought with had the previous year's model of this and literally wore it everyday. Since buying mine I have definitely put it to the test and it has passed with flying colors. I absolutely love the long torso on this! Perfect for tucking into your pants on those bone chilling days and with the extra length it never comes untucked! I find this to be the perfect layer for me. I wear my R1 as a base layer on super cold days on the snow, and as a mid layer when strutting round the town. I can definitely see myself with this everywhere I go in the summer as well in case of a chilly eve. I like the zipper placement on the cheek this year! having a cold zipper up the nose is the worst! The hood is snug and fits great under a hat or a helmet. I could literally go on and on but I have maxed the 1000 character limit! Seriously though; buy this piece! You will not regret!!!!!!!!!
I bought the "graphite navy" color and couldnt be more pleased. The color is actually pretty dark and not bright at all.I've owned the past r1 hoodies and this is slightly better in a few ways, but mostly the same. Loved the zip up and how it goes diagonal and avoids your lip / nose. Much more comfortable. Overall, very happy with this purchase!
