"Probably the best fleece layer for the mountains"
I own four of the R1 fleeces - two hoodies and two regular. I took three to Nepal and wore them 24/7 while volunteering in a remote clinic near Everest Base Camp for three months. Perfect for layering in cold conditions or even alone in the spring/fall. I even slept in one most nights. I will be taking them to Siberia next month and expect the same experience. The hood fits under helmets for warm ears. They also wash and dry fairly quickly. I even wear the non-hoodies nearly every day in the hospital at home (which is always cold). I might need another...
The R1 is by far my new favorite piece of outdoor clothing. It is a super warm yet lightweight layer perfect for all kinds of outdoor adventures. The women's version with hood is great because of the balaclava, nice for those below 0 degree days. The hoody version is also long enough and offers good coverage, so no snow down the pants. Would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in alpine activities as an essential base layer!
