The Patagonia Women's R3 Hoody is a warm, high-loft, unbelievably soft, compressible fleece jacket. This mid-layer is so soft that it forced us to add a rule into our warehouse employee handbook: Section 8.2.e - Employees must not rub their faces all over the Patagonia R3 hoodies. Believe me, this used to be an issue and the implementation of this rule caused a noticeable drop in morale. Aside from being ultra-soft, the R3 hoody is warm enough to be worn on its own in cold weather or layered under a shell in super cold weather. Polartec Thermal Pro polyester wicks moisture and traps heat and the Polartec Power Dry panels (running along the underside of the arms and down the sides) improve fit and enhance mobility.

"Good fuzzy warm fleece but the arms are tight"
I love this fleece as far as warmth and feel goes; however, it is super slim fitting, which works as part of a layering system but not when you are wearing a sweater underneath. I can't wear bulky shirts under it or they bunch up in the sleeve. Also the fit is super close to the body so bulky=bad. The ups are that it's warm enough on its own for days in the 40's, it works well as part of a system (I wear it under a Patagonia down sweater with the Piolet jacket over both for winter activities), and it feels great next to the skin. I'm 5'7 and 125 so I bought the medium and it's just right (the small was too tight and the sleeves were too short). The only advantage of the tight nature is that there are no gaps to let the cold air in.
I purchased this jacket for my sister who really hates the cold and always complains in the winter. After buying her this jacket, I haven't heard any complaints from her. The jacket is soft and holds up well in the cold. Its a great great layer to wear under your jacket on the very cold days.
I normally get Patagonia size S (5'3" & 118 lb with wide shoulders). This time I ordered a M to fit over 1 to 2 underlayers. It fits me perfectly without being bulky. This is the softest fleece I've ever owned and don't want to take it off. The color Ikat Purple is prettier than the picture so it is a steal with discount!
So I bought this jacket for both casual use and as a layering piece over lots of rock climbing gear. I haven't been on too many outdoor adventures with it yet, but I know it can withstand the heat (or you know, provide the heat). I'm really pleased that it's slim fit and goes down pretty far on your torso. There's nothing worse than a jacket that rides up. I wear this thing every day. It's worth the money. And super cozy.
"Not windproof but warmer than TNFSummit Series"
I bought a Large Black one, even tho i have a million black fleeces already. Its almost perfect except that im 5'7'' and the sleeves are almost too short, length is perfect-a few inches past my belt/waist, hood fits snuggly against my head-fit for a woman's size, and much warmer than my TNF Summit Series (similar style/color). Seems to have a denser fabric than TNF and after washing both about the same amount of times, Patagonia's has remained almost exactly the same as when I first bought a year ago. TNF has gotten thinner after washings, but sleeves size seems better fit. If I could repurchase I'd probably buy a larger size if available because the whole short sleeve thing is kinda a big deal in the winter, but I'd totally buy again and in more colors!
"Soft and Comfy! Can't get any better than that!"
Love this zip up! It's super soft and warm enough to wear outside while walking the dogs on a cold night. (even though I spend a lot of time wearing it on the couch) It is also thin enough that I can layer it under an outer shell without all the extra bulk while snowboarding. I have a hard time finding a jacket that actually zips up and keeps my neck/chin warm without choking me and this one is perfect. It keeps my face super warm and doesn't cut off my airway.
I have 3 of the older Patagonia R3 HiLoft Hoodies. I wear one everyday. If I am not wearing it, one is my car ready to be put on. The new Patagonia Women's R3 Hoody has many new enhancements. The fleece is a thicker fleece so it keeps you super warm. I also like that the hoody and collar lay flat instead of bulking up like the previous R3 Hoody. AND the blue butterfly color is AWESOME! Overall, this is your go to hoody. I will be purchasing the black hoody as soon as I can. You can never have too many!
