The SPECS of the Petzl Men's Elios Climbing Helmet
"Best helmet on the market in its price range"
With so many helmets on the market and so many variables to go along, purchasing a helmet can be a daunting task. In search of my first helmet for leading, I came across this little gem from Petzl and figured I'd give it a try... and boy am I glad I did! This helmet may not provide all the fancy bells and whistles that come along with other helmets, but at this reasonable price point, you'd be hard pressed to find a better deal for your dollar.
This is one of the most common helmets around, and for a good reason. It is comfortable and adjustable, and will probably do just as good at protecting your melon from a falling rock as a more expensive helmet would.
Don't get size 1 unless you're a kid, an oompa loompa, or a really tiny adult (this goes by head size, not mental age either). Ordered a size 2 in smurfette blue and am satisfied with its performance for wilderness SAR work, including some light climbing and technical rescue (but you;ll probably want something sturdier if you'll be doing caving or heavy rescue work). It is also great for not smacking my head on branches while bushwhacking at night through mazes of rhododendron-laden boulder-fields. My Petzl headlamp fits into the slots neatly. Very comfortable even after wearing for hours and it is easily adjustable. Biggest con: due to how light it is you might forget you're wearing it and get laughed at for having it on at the bar after training/climbing/masochistic bushwhacking/whatever else you're using it for.
This helmet really makes me very depressed, I get points to redeem the men with helmets, female models indeed received a helmet, moosejaw staff working less and less attentive, and practicing such small errors are made. A direct impact on my outdoor activities. Hope that some of you can seriously work. If this continues you will lose lots of customers.
This is a great helmet for just about everything! I picked one up at a garage sale in Moab last year, and have used it heavily ever since. It is easy to adjust, fits snugly, and is light enough you forget it is there. Over all, a solid helmet that you will get a lot of use out of! Good luck and happy climbing!
This is a pretty solid helmet. In cold weather it adjusts well over a skull cap and is plenty warm with the vents closed. Headlamp use is easy. It's difficult to adjust one handed, especially with gloves, but it doesn't need much tinkering. This wouldn't be my choice for a warm weather, big wall helmet as there are lighter and cooler options. But this is my go-to mountaineering helmet and it's comfortable enough that it's on my head all day long. Fortunately I haven't had to really test it against impact. But it's strong enough to use as a seat in the snow during dinner.
I have a pretty small head size and the size 2 will fit nicely. Size 1 must be for kids. The robust shell will mean this will last a lifetime. B big negative is that the strap length underneath the ears are limited (unlike cycling Giro helmets) so that you cannot slide the clip down to clear the ears more. Looks a little 'dorky', but all climbing helmets do.
Petzl brand helmets have proven themselves over the years. This is a great helmet!! We use it for wilderness search & rescue with K9s. Has vents so it is safe to use when we do cadaver water searches as well as wilderness work. Adjustable, washable lining, adaptable for a visor, head light etc. We highly recommend this helmet!! PW
"Lightweight and durable for a good price"
I've had this helmet for a few years and I have been very happy with it. The adjustable fit makes it easy to re-size for hats, and it's light enough that I can wear it all day without it being uncomfortable. Compared to some of the new foam helmets like the Meteor III it is very durable; you can stuff it in the bottom of a pack, knock it around, and it's no problem. The buckle will sometimes let slack out on its own and I'll have to tighten it back up, but that's a pretty minor annoyance. Basically, the Elios is a pretty cheap way to stay safe.
This is just what you would expect a mid-priced helmet from Petzl to be. It is not super light but not too heavy. It has good ventilation but not great. The blue is blue but not too blue. Overall it is good but not too good that you want to keep it in a display case.
